Humeral stem size

5/29/2022

The size of the humeral stem may be approximated by determining the diameter of the humeral head. Other variables should be considered including:
1.  Severity of osteoporosis
2. gender
3. minor axis diameter vs major axis diameter

Small humeral head diameters should alert the surgeon that a small humeral stem may be required.
Osteoporosis may indicate that a cemented stem may be appropriate
The size of the humeral stem will affect canal fill ratio, proximal shielding and pain

When should I consider knee replacement surgery?

When your xray shows bone on bone changes, this means that the cartilage covering the ends of your bones in your knee is damaged and worn out. The underlying bone is exposed. If the cartilage is worn out on both bones in your knee, the result is bone on bone changes. This generally results in pain and swelling and instability when you walk. If your activities of daily living are affected, or you experience pain at night and you start limiting your activities because of pain, you should consider knee replacement surgery.

Where is the incision made for  knee replacement surgery?
The implant can be inserted several ways. The incision may be made in the middle of the knee, the most common way or on either side of the kneecap. The advantage of making an incision on the side of the knee is that the muscles are not cut. However, the incision on the outer side of the knee has some disadvantages; certain knee implants cannot be easily used; the knee may be feel unstable. ie slips out when you walk and seeing the entire knee is more difficult. Choosing which side to make the incision is a conversation to have with your surgeon.

How long does it take to recover from anterior hip replacement?
The anterior approach allows them to return home the same day or the next day.
Recovery Time: Because the posterior technique involves cutting muscles around the hip joint and giving them enough time to repair, the recovery time is longer — generally two to four months
By 3 weeks, most patients after the anterior approach are very functional

MARCH 18, 2019 Studies Confirm Benefits of Direct Anterior Approach to Total Hip Replacement New studies link the direct anterior approach to total hip arthroplasty with faster recovery and better results.
A recent study of the direct anterior vs lateral approaches to total hip arthroplasty indicates superior results using the direct anterior approach (DAA). The study, published by the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, shows significantly reduced pain levels, lower blood loss, and faster functional recovery following DAA. Additionally, several past studies have linked direct anterior total hip arthroplasty to shorter hospital stays and lower dislocation rates in comparison to other approaches.
